Participants were hemiplegic patients, and met the following criteria. Age between 20 and 90 years old, height between 140 cm and 190 cm, weight between 35 kg and 100 kg, Stroke Impairment Assessment Set(SIAS) motor score for lower extremity total >=4 and =<12, Functional Independence Measure(FIM) gait score>=4, FIM comprehension>=3, FIM social interaction>=3, FIM memory>=3. Gender was not considered. Participants were assigned 1:1 to two groups that performed balance practice assist (BEAR group) or usual rehabilitation practice (Conventional group).
61 patients were included in the study, 30 patients were assigned to the BEAR group and 31 to the Conventional group. Five patients in the BEAR group (one found ineligible, 4 withdrew consent) and 2 in the Conventional group (one withdrew consent and one deteriorated) dropped out during the intervention period. Thus, 25 patients in the BEAR group and 29 in the Conventional group were analyzed for the primary outcome. At discharge, 25 patients in the BEAR group and 29 in the Conventional group were analyzed.
As an analysis of the safety, the frequency totaling of the noxious event in the intervention period was carried out. Discontinuation of treatment due to adverse events was evaluated as the withdrawal rate. As a result, no adverse event occurred, and there was no failure of the Balance Exercise Assist robot.
There was no difference in the Mini-BESTest total score, the primary outcome, between the BEAR and Conventional groups. The secondary outcomes of comfortable walking speed, TUG, and activities of daily living were similarly not different between the two groups.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether balance training using BEAR is effective in improving balance ability compared with conventional rehabilitation on subacute hemiplegic stroke patients. The balance training using BEAR recognized the equivalent balance function improvement in comparison with the usual rehabilitation training.
